During this session, we’ll explore what it means to build our own table as opposed to using a readymade one. When we build someone else’s furniture—for example, IKEA’s—whose view of the world are we cobbling together? And what things are implicit in its existence? When we build our own furniture from scratch what choices become visible, and what can those choices tell us about how we want to live and gather together? We’ll briefly talk about artist Sam Gould and writer Matthew Stadler before constructing the wooden tables for the rest of our program, The Great Plain.

Join us as we attempt to break a world record for the longest game of telephone (in Holland, MI). Together, we’ll play the childhood favorite Telephone, whispering a message from person to person with the goal of passing the exact same message all the way through the line. Our hope is to get a line that goes from inside our space outward into our parking lot and back. Afterwards, we’ll reflect on how this game connects to broader movement building and community organizing.

Cob Workshop with Cass Stock

Cob is a new(ish) word for a very old building material. Made from dirt, clay, water, and straw, cob is found in many cultures around the world. In this workshop, Cass Stock will lead us through not only making cob from scratch, but also introduce basic sculpture techniques as we turn dirt into art. There’ll be a short time for reflection and a chance to have your own cob-based sculpture be part of an upcoming display here at CREA.
Attendees will leave having learned about this historied material, as well as with a small booklet about cob, how to make it, and its historical significance.
